Hey! I’ve been thinking about what my film opening should
represent. The first idea which came into my head was teenagers. Teenagers are
often misunderstood due to stereotypes that movies and television shows portray
them as. Being a teenager can be stressful as they are in the stage before adulthood,
yet they aren’t a child anymore. They are learning to do things independently while
managing their personal life and work/school life.
Sometimes the media can misportray teenagers in multiple
ways. They demonstrate teenagers to be disrespectful, lazy and disobedient; however,
this only represents a minority of this group. For example, in Lazy Teens: Do Something! by Stossel and
Cohen, a mom shares how her kids stopped doing chores when she became too busy
to create chore charts; due to this, she stated how her kids are lazy and won’t
clean their rooms. The fact is that teenagers can become lazy after a long,
tiring day at school, so until they are asked to do something, it most likely won’t
get done. However, this shouldn’t define teenagers as lazy. When teenagers have
their mind set on a specific goal and are determined, they will get it accomplished.
Another stereotype about teenagers is that they are addicted
to their electronic devices. According to the article, Why Teens aren’t Partying Anymore, it was found that teenagers prefer
to be at home watching tv or movies and that their life is revolved around social
media. Although it is true that teenagers are on social media sites often, it’s
a way to keep in touch with distant friends and family members.
I believe that teenagers are often misrepresented in a
negative way based on how the media portrays them. Of course teenagers aren’t
perfect. No one is. Life is a cycle of learning new things and adapting to
change. Teenagers could definitely be a potential group I may choose to
