Hey there! Hope you guys are having a fabulous week so far!
As I
continue on with my genre research, I was interested in finding out more about
musicals. Film musicals refer to movies which include singing and/or dancing as
an important element through the involvement of characters. Although musicals
are less popular then action films, some award winning films, such as La La Land, have been drawing attention
to this genre.
Musicals often consist of telling a story with the use of
music and dance throughout the movie. Songs within musicals normally help in
the development of characters or in the advancement of the overall plot. Musical
films often target teenagers, children or anyone who likes stage productions; they
create powerful music that appeals to their audience.
Newer musicals have also created a popular soundtrack to
sell to the general public. This entices people to pay for the music they
enjoyed listening to throughout the film. One of the main differences between
film musicals and stage musicals is the limited accessibility to certain
backgrounds on stage. Many times, character’s in musical films sing or dance as
if they were performing in front of a live audience.
Two basic elements that make up a musical are sound and
movement. This is often portrayed through mise-en-scène, lighting and music to
represent the character’s emotions. This was displayed in The Jazz Singer, one of the first musical films.
The Greatest Showman
was released in December of 2017. This film sparked a major impact on the
musical genre as many people loved the songs sung by well-known actors, Hugh
Jackman and Zac Efron. Many could not get enough of the fabulous soundtrack which
drew a tremendous amount of attention to a musical. This film won numerous awards
due to their creative soundtrack.
Mamma Mia! was directed
by Phyllida Lloyd in 2008. This story of a bride-to-be trying to find her
father was created using various songs. It was nominated in 2009 for the Golden
Globes as Best Motion Picture-Musical. Viewers could not get enough of this
classic which led to the recreation, Mamma
Mia! Here We Go Again, in 2018.
Some additional film musicals
include:
The musical genre provides a unique way for the characters to
express themselves to their audience through singing and dancing. It helps the
audience develop knowledge about each character individually along with the overall
story line. Be sure to comment your favorite musicals below!
